Destination: Cuc Phuong National Park
General Introduction: Cuc Phuong national park is located in Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces, about 160km to the south-west of Hanoi. Established in 1962, Cuc Phuong was the first national park to be created in Vietnam. It is dominated by limestone forest and covered with large tracts of primeval rainforest. Todate, over 300 bird species have been recorded at Cuc Phuong and the national park is situated at the northern end of the Annamese Lowlands Endemic Bird Area. Cuc Phuong is also designated as an Important Bird Area.
Itinerary
Day 1. Hanoi – Van Long - Cuc Phuong (L/D).
Early morning departure from Hanoi to Cuc Phuong national park, stopover at Van Long Nature Reserve to spot the White-browed Crake. Get to the national park around 10:00am, short visit to the Primate Rescue Centre, check in and have lunch at Bong Sub-station. Afternoon birding around Bong area.
Lunch, dinner and overnight at Bong.
Night-watch: Possibility of Brown Wood Owl, Spot-bellied Eagle Owl and Giant Flying Squirrel.
Day 2. Cuc Phuong (B/L/D).
Full day birdwatching following the loop trail. Packed lunch.Breakfast, dinner and overnight at Bong Sub-station.
Night-watch: Possibility of Brown Wood Owl, Spot-bellied Eagle Owl and Giant Flying Squirrel.
Day 3. Cuc Phuong – Hanoi (B/L).
Morning birdwatching around Bong, check-out, lunch at park headquarters. Afternoon birding around Mac lake. Return to Hanoi in the late afternoon.
Highlight species: Silver Pheasant, Grey-peacock Pheasant, Red-vented Barbet, Red-collared Woodpecker, Pied Falconet, Eared Pitta, Bar-bellied Pitta, Blue-rumped Pitta, White-winged Magpie, Indochinese and Common Green Magpie, Ratchet-tailed Treepie, Hainan Blue Flycatcher, Black-browed Fulvetta, Rufous-throated Fulvetta, Limestone Wren Babbler, Stristram’s Bunting, Bianchi’s Warbler, Long-tailed and Silver-breasted Broadbill, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Grey-backed Shrike, White-browed Piculet. Winter visitors that are possible here include Black-breasted Thrush, Japanese Thrush,Fujian Niltava.
