General Introduction: Tam Dao national park is located in Vinh Phuc province, about 70km from central Hanoi. The topography is characterized by hills and low mountains. The natural forest is of two main types: lowland evergreen forest and lower montane evergreen forest. Tam Dao national park qualifies as an Important Bird Area because of its importance for the conservation of biome-restricted bird species that are known from few other sites in Vietnam, such as the Blue-napped Pitta, Purple Cochoa, Chestnut-headed Tesia, Pale-footed Bush Warbler and Greater Rufous-headed Parrotbill. In particular, Tam Dao national park is one of the best places in northern Vietnam for viewing Raptor migration during autumn and spring. Notable species that can be seen include the Greater Spotted Eagle and Imperial Eagle.
Itinerary
Day 1. Hanoi – Tam Dao (L/D).
Early morning departure from Hanoi to Tam Dao national park, birdwatching around the national park headquarters, come up to Tam Dao town. Afternoon birding along the trail up to the TV tower. Lunch, dinner and overnight stay at Mela Hotel.
Day 2. Tam Dao (B/L/D).
Full day birdwatching following the trail to water tank and several other small trails. Packed lunch. Breakfast, dinner and overnight at Mela Hotel.
Day 3. Tam Dao – Hanoi (B/L/D).
Full day birdwatching following the trail to the second Tam Dao. Packed lunch. Breakfast, dinner and overnight at Mela Hotel.
Day 4. Tam Dao – Hanoi (B/L/).
Morning and afternoon birding around the town. Lunch at hotel. Return to Hanoi in the late afternoon.
Highlight species: Grey Laughingthrush, Chestnut Bulbul, Black-chinned Yuhina, Striated Yuhina, Fork-tailed Sunbird, Short-tailed Parrotbill, Red-billed Blue Magpie, Ratchet-tailed Treepie, Green Cochoa, Rusty-naped Pitta, Blue-naped Pitta, White-hooded Babbler, Spot-necked Babbler, Coral-billed Scimitar Babbler, Greater Rufous-headed Parrotbill. Winter visitors that are possible here include Black-breasted Thrush, Japanese Thrush, Siberian Thrush, Fujian Niltava.
